Healing Begins With Feeling Seen: Why Inclusive Healthcare Matters

Pride Month is a celebration of the diversity, courage, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as a time to reflect on the progress achieved and the journey that continues toward equality and inclusion. Access to compassionate, equitable healthcare remains an important part of that journey. While healthcare should be welcoming and accessible to all, that is not always the experience for every individual. Creating spaces where people feel heard, respected, and supported is essential to meaningful care. At Grand Meridian and Kamwo, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where individuals can feel comfortable being themselves.
Our practitioners strive to meet each person with compassion and individualized treatment, acknowledging their unique path towards wellness.

Listening to Our Patients

One way we strive to provide inclusive care is by listening closely to each patient’s goals, concerns, and experiences without making assumptions. Treatment plans are personalized and clearly explained, empowering individuals to take an active role in their healthcare decisions. As treatment progresses, ongoing patient feedback helps guide adjustments to herbal formulas and strategies, ensuring care remains responsive to their evolving needs. By encouraging open communication and mutual trust, we want patients to feel heard.

Care Rooted in Respect

Respecting each patient's name, preferred pronouns, identity, and lived experiences is an important part of a therapeutic clinical environment. We recognize that healthcare is not one-size-fits-all and strive to meet people where they are. Chinese herbal formulas can often be customized to accommodate religious considerations, including kosher requirements, dietary restrictions, and personal preferences, helping ensure care is both effective and aligned with each individual's needs.

Support Through Empowerment

We believe that informed patients are empowered patients.

“In addition to acupuncture and herbal medicine, we provide individualized nutritional and lifestyle guidance to help people better understand the factors influencing their health. Through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), patients can gain insight into patterns within their bodies and develop practical tools to support their well-being between treatments.”

For those using Chinese herbal medicine, preparing an herbal formula can become a meaningful part of the healing process. The act of cooking herbs encourages mindfulness and active participation in one's care, fostering a deeper connection to the medicine being taken. We also encourage patients to maintain relationships with their primary care providers and specialists, viewing Chinese medicine as a valuable complement to conventional healthcare and a collaborative part of an individual's overall wellness plan.

Inclusive Care Is Not Limited to a Single Month

Pride Month serves as a reminder that every person deserves to feel listened to, respected and supported when seeking care. At Grand Meridian and Kamwo, we remain committed to sustaining an environment where all patients can pursue better health and healing with confidence.

Beyond Inflammation: A TCM Perspective on Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, leading to inflammation, pain, stiffness, and progressive structural damage. While modern medicine focuses on immunomodulation and symptom control, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a time-tested, individualized framework that emphasizes root-cause differentiation, constitutional support, and long-term balance.

In TCM, RA falls under the category of Bi Syndrome (痹证 / 痹病) and is diagnosed as “Wang Bi” (尪痹).—a condition caused by the invasion of wind, cold, dampness, or heat into the meridians, compounded over time by internal deficiencies of qi, blood, yin, yang, or organ systems such as the liver and kidneys. This pattern-based understanding allows treatment to evolve alongside disease progression, rather than relying on a single static protocol.

Why Pattern Differentiation Matters

RA does not present uniformly. Early-stage migratory pain differs fundamentally from chronic deformity with blood stasis or deficiency. TCM treatment is therefore guided by 辨证论治 (pattern differentiation and treatment), ensuring that therapies address not only inflammation, but also circulation, immunity, tissue repair, and systemic resilience.

Integrated Therapeutic Strategies

• Customized herbal formulas to dispel pathogenic factors, regulate immunity, nourish deficiencies, and protect joint structures

• Acupuncture to regulate qi and blood, reduce pain, improve mobility, and support neuroimmune balance

• Tui Na and manual therapies to enhance circulation, reduce stiffness, and improve functional outcomes

• Dietary and lifestyle guidance tailored to each patient’s constitutional pattern
