Tom Bisio is a world-renowned martial artist and a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine. He heads a clinic in New York City where his unique background in Western and Eastern approaches to healing has helped him create and implement effective rehabilitation programs.

Founder of New York Internal Arts (newyorkinternalarts.com) and Internal Arts International (internalartsinternational.com) which teach and promote the Chinese Internal Arts of Ba Gua Zhang and Xing Yi Quan and their connections to both Chinese medicine and the healing arts, Tom is also co-founder of Zheng Gu Tui Na (ZGTN).


About Frank Butler

Dr. Frank Butler, DACM began his study and practice of Chinese medicine in 1990, completing a seven-year traditional apprenticeship with the internationally renowned Ken Ark Fun Gong (Kenny Gong). Frank has studied internal medicine and medical massage with some of the most famous TCM masters of the 20th century, including: Jiao Shu-de (Internal Medicine), Chen Rui-Chun (Shang Han Lun), Wu Bing-Cai (Wen Bing and Jing Gui Lao Ye), Hong Guang-Xiang (Respiratory Disorders), Wei Ja (Acupuncture), Wu Bo-Ping (Internal Medicine), Zang Fu-Ke (Tui Na).

Soaks

All-Purpose Soak

For those who want one soak that does it all. This all-purpose soak comes in modular form with a base formula and four additions that make it suitable for conditions characterized by cold, heat, pain or severe pain. Simply add the appropriate module to the base formula. Packaged in a flow through bags for convenient use.


Blood Stasis Soak

This soak is appropriate for stage 2 or 3 sinew injuries which are characterized by blood stasis and restricted mobility as the primary symptoms. Alleviates pain, dispels blood stasis and relieves spasm. Packaged in a flow through bag for convenient use.


Heat Clearing Soak

This soak is appropriate for stage 2 or 3 sinew injuries which are characterized by heat, redness and pain as the primary symptoms. Clears heat, resolves damp heat, dispels blood stasis and kills pain. When there is heat, the liquid should be warm, not hot, when soaking. Packaged in a flow through bag for convenient use.


Osteophyte Soak (Bone Spur)

An external soak for bone spurs on the heel and other superficial areas of the body. This formula helps to soften and break up osteophytes. Particularly effective when used in conjunction with manual techniques, acupuncture and the Zheng Gu Tui Na Osteophyte Powder or similar formulas.


Pathogenic Cold Soak

This soak is appropriate for stage 2 or 3 sinew injuries which are characterized by cold and damp with heaviness or restricted mobility of the injured area as the primary symptoms. Warms the channels and collaterals, dispels cold and dampness and relieves spasm. Packaged in a flow through bag for convenient use.


Sinew Relaxing Soak

Place herbal tea bag in 2-3 gallons of water. Bring water to boil and simmer over a low flame for 30 minutes. Steam affected area while the liquid cools. Then soak for 10-15 minutes once or twice daily. Reuse for 4 days by saving the herbal soak and reheating to the appropriate temperature (without simmering). External use only.


Liniments

DIE DA JIU TRAUMA LINIMENT Used by martial artists all over the world, Die Da Jiu is the number one treatment for bruises, contusions, sprains and fractures. This recipe is particularly effective for killing pain and reducing swelling and stasis. Appropriate for stage1 and 2 tendon and ligament injuries.



EAGLE CLAW HAND STRENGTHENING LINIMENT A liniment to bring the Qi up to the hands to strengthen the skin, tendons and bones of the hand.



IRON PALM TRAINING LINIMENT This formula dispels stasis invigorates the Qi and Blood, warms the meridians, kills pain and strengthens the bones and sinews.



MUSCLE LINIMENT This muscle liniment contains cooling, anti-inflammatory blood activating herbs, making it useful for chronically irritated muscles as well as rheumatoid problems or chronic tendon injuries that flare up and present as red; hot; and swollen.



TENDON LINIMENT This classic herbal liniment formula is for a variety of sprain and soft tissue injuries. applicable for sub-acute stage two injuries or chronic stage three injuries.



TIBETAN RED FLOWER OIL This classic Red Flower oil formula is made from high grade Tibetan saffron (Hong Hua). Applicable for sprains, soft tissue injuries, or as a gua sha medium. This oil is best for sub-actue stage two injuries and chronic stage three injuries.



WOODEN DUMMY ARM CONDITIONING LINIMENT This classic formula herbal liniment is to support arm conditioning training in martial arts and grappling. Use before and after training on areas of the body used to strike, to improve circulation and recovery.


Ointments

GREEN OINTMENT Green Ointment can be used in conjunction with massage or guasha to expel wind and cold from the channels and collaterals in order to stop transmission of pathogenic factors into the zangfu. As early as the Han Dynasty, Zhang Zhong Jing advocated this type of treatment for heaviness of the extremities (due to wind-damp-cold).



RU YI JIN HUANG GAO OINTMENT Generally used for 2nd stage sinew injuries or in late 1st stage injuries where redness and heat are not present, but there is stagnation of fluids and blood with swelling. The presence of more warming damp dispelling ingredients helps to prevent Bi (obstruction) syndrome from developing and helps to dispel stagnant fluids.This preparation of Jin Huang Gao is premixed with beeswax and sesame oil for immediate use.



SAN HUANG GAO OINTMENT San Huang Gao (Herbal Ice Poultice) is the premiere external gao for 1st stage sinew and bone injuries with swelling, pain and redness (heat). In Chinese medicine, it is the alternative to using ice, reducing inflammation while simultaneously reducing swelling and removing stasis. San Huang Gao can also be used to treat extensive bruising of large muscle areas. Preparation is available premixed with beeswax and sesame oil for immediate use.



TUI NA OINTMENT This is an aromomatic, acrid, and deeply penetrating ointment fur use with Tui Na or Gua Sha. Best for stage three chronic injuries and any area of Bi Syndrome causing pain.


Internal Formulas

BONE SINEW GAO This Bone Sinew Gao is used in second or 3rd stage sinew and bone injuries where the bones and tendons are in their normal alignment but there is still swelling; stiffness and pain. This formula also has an astringent effect that helps to tighten and strengthen overstretched or lax sinews, so bones and sinews must be correctly aligned before applying. Bone-Sinew Gao is available as a powder.



OSTEOPHYTE CAPSULES Can help eliminate the pain associated with osteophytes or bone spurs, help reduce the spur, and help prevent the formation of new osteophytes.



QING DAI SAN Qing Dai San is used to resolve hot, open sores and lesions on the skin. It is very effective for local treatment of herpes lesions, poison ivy, etc.
